Galvanized is a zinc coating that enhances corrosion resistance, allowing protection of the base metal from rusting. The metal zinc in the presence of a corrosive environment will sacrifice itself to protect the steel. The protection given is a direct relationship with the quality of the zinc available. Therefore, the more zinc available, the longer the period of corrosion protection. In normal atmosphere conditions, the relationship would be that of G90 (.90oz/sq. ft.) will protect the steel about 20 years.
Hot dip galvanized sheet offers the highest corrosion resistance at the lowest cost, plus excellent formability. Available in many strength levels and a variety of thickness and coating weights, it is produced for unexposed or non-critical exposed panels in corrosion-prone areas. Galvanized Steel provides the best cut edge protection, scratch protection and penetration protection. The best description of the protection zinc gives is "healing over" on any exposed steel.
